This American Life

What I love about the advice in Radio: An Illustrated guide is how obvious it seems after I read it. Of course I should be teasing out the series of events in a story. Of course I should be trying connecting the story to a larger idea. The story about the man in the subway telling people they can stay or go isn't really a story without the idea that we want approval from strangers.

What surprised me about how This American Life is compiled all the way up to the last minute. That, for as produced as the show is, they try to keep life in it by having it air like a news broadcast. It made me appreciate Ira's skill at the top of the show in a very different way. How do you balance the timing with trying to stay casual and conversational? Years of practice probably.
