Radio: An Illustrated Guide

I found Radio: An Illustrated Guide to be very interesting and informative. Ira Glass presents the information in a way that is easily understood for people with all levels of experience. It was really helpful to see the process that the producers and hosts go through on a day-to-day basis. It reminded me of what Diane was saying on Monday night: not everything people produce is gold and sometimes it is beneficial to realize that and move on to better things. I liked the story of the young woman going through the internship process. Her original pitch wouldn't work for the show, but after really listening and accepting constructive criticism she eventually came up with a good idea for a story.

Ira's tips on how to interview were also very helpful. Although I have heard some of these tips before, the reading/blogging experience forced me to really think about them. His suggestion to go in with a general structure that is simple so you can be flexible to obtain the specific details that you know you need to get really resonated with me. Also seeing specific examples of how to redirect the interviewee to show us what happened, not just tell us was a really helpful tool for me. Overall I found this piece to be entertaining and extremely helpful. I hope to start to using these techniques to make my own work stronger!
