Ear-destroying Noise

My really falling in love with sound came with the discovery of my parent's record player and record collection. Our musical interests did not synch very well, but it was a start nonetheless. I started spending a lot of time in record stores perusing through every section I could get my hands on.
However, with the wonders of the internet, music can easily be acquired for free, so when it came time to lay some money down on the much-more-expensive-than-free records, I wanted to make my purchases special. I started impulsively buying albums I could not find on the internet, which means I was pretty much spending a lot of time thumbing through the experimental section. Here was an eclectic bunch of bizarre sounds and wonderful tape loops. Anything that caught my eye (or ear) I would buy without knowing what was in store for me when I got home. These usually occupied the space of two extremes: maximalist, ear-destroying noise, and minimalist recordings of things like the lingering reverberations of cymbal crashes with a sample or two placed in for good measure.
These crazy sound collages were definitely always more challenging of a listen than any record of coherent music, but there was still something incredibly interesting within. These are the types of moments that have really instilled in me a love for sound.
